Inspired by Byzantine mosaics, Tiffany Studios used iridescent favrile glass tesserae embedded in curved plaster to create highly decorative columns. In 1893, Tiffany used this column style to create the Columbian booth at the World's Exposition in Chicago. These Tiffany mosaics are the inspiration for these earrings.
