Home to the world's first skyscrapers and noted for its innovations in engineering and architectural design, Chicago rebounded from the Great Fire of 1871 in style. Architects John T. Long and Frank Lloyd Wright, and firms such as Burnham & Root, Rapp & Rapp, and Holabird & Roche—to name but a few—left their mark upon the city's skyline. An aesthetically diverse collection of styles came together in (now historic) buildings that rub shoulders with distinctly modern structures created over the last hundred-some years. Chicago's architectural identity continues its bold evolution to this day.
Photographer Eric Allix Rogers (American, b. 1985) earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Chicago and is passionate about visually recording the city's built environment. He photographed the twelve structures included here over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. Rogers is a resident of South Shore and is the Open House Chicago Program Coordinator at Chicago Architecture Foundation.
